Cities that time chose to forget

Under the sand, under the ice, under the roots, under the waves — entire civilizations wait. They built gates and temples and libraries and clocks. Then time buried them. Lost is about the moment of discovery — the second a human finds something that should not be there.

The volcano should have destroyed everything. But inside the crater, carved into the inner walls, is an amphitheater. Stone seats descending in perfect circles. A waterfall where the stage should be. Someone built a theater inside a volcano. The volcano kept it.

The Compass

Carved into the mountain floor. Thirty meters wide. A compass rose with cardinal directions in a language no one reads. The center stone points toward a narrow canyon that leads into darkness. The expedition stands at the edge. The compass says go. The darkness says think.

Two pillars and a lintel. No walls, no building, just a gate standing alone in the desert. The sand on one side is gold. The sand on the other side is white. The gate connects nothing to nothing. But the sand is different. Something changes when you walk through.

The ice preserved everything. Domed roofs. Towers. Streets. An entire city frozen in time, visible through the blue ice like looking through thick glass. The research team camps on the surface and stares down. They can see it but they cannot reach it. Maybe the ice is not trapping the city. Maybe it is protecting it.

From above it is just a beautiful pool. Turquoise water, hanging vines, tropical birds. But dive beneath the surface and the water opens into a temple. Carved columns. A broken altar. Gold scattered on the stone floor. The jungle hid it above. The water hid it below.

The face has been here longer than the tree. But the tree does not care about history. Its roots grip the forehead, wrap the chin, cover one eye. An archaeologist with a small brush tries to free the cheek. The jungle is eating a god. One person is trying to save it.

Every wall is a map. Every map shows a place that does not exist. The coastlines are wrong. The mountains are in the wrong place. The continents do not match. Either the mapmaker was mad, or the world has changed more than we think.

A clock face thirty meters wide, carved into the jungle floor. The numerals are in a writing system that predates all known language. The stone hands stopped at a specific time. What happened at that moment? Who needed a clock this large? And why did it stop?
